South Africa
South Africa has been on my list for a long time, and we've finally managed to get over there, and had a decent look around. Although I suspect many photographers like myself could devote a lifetime to storytelling in this country, not only from a wildlife perspective, but a cultural one as well. Like many countries in Africa their histories are often fraught with a fight for survival. Socio-economic dichotomy resulting from political corruption, and instability has a direct impact on the environment, not only from people trying to survive, but also from greed, and power. This was startlingly evident when we passed through Swaziland, and spent a night reading their history, and in the early 1900's all of their wildlife were completely wiped out, and people in high places were responsible. I heard a sobering question on a documentary once, 'Do humans really believe we have a right to everything on this planet?'. It's far more regular to see the environment suffer in the face of personal, or corporate profit. Ok, I'll step down off my soapbox now, and talk about the positive aspects of what we did experience, and hopefully with proper management, these amazing sights will be here for generations to come. We started our sojourn in Phalaborwa and after 5 minutes inside the gate we're shaking our heads in amazement, the first smallish lake we drove by was filled with hippos, 2 mins down the road in a tropical downpour we were face to face with a Cape Water buffalo. The ubiquitous Impala was seen in great number every 15 minutes. The list of animals goes on and on, and we did manage to see the 'Big 5', Elephants;Lions;Leopard;Cape Water Buffalo, and Rhinos. One our guides suggested it should be the big 7, which should include Crocodiles, and Hippopotamus too. We also spent time underwater, I'll start to include pictures from the wildlife seen there, and will also include panoramas from various locations, and some landscapes from the incomparable Cape Town, which in my opinion one of the most beautiful cities on Earth.
